Kolleru Bird Sanctuary Tourism

Kolleru Bird Sanctuary is a notable haven located near Eluru in Andhra Pradesh, India, spanning across 673 square kilometers. Recognized as one of the largest freshwater lakes in India, Kolleru Lake attracts a vast number of migratory birds, making this wetland a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The lake's ecosystem supports high biodiversity, including numerous fish species, which serve as a livelihood for local fishermen. The sanctuary plays host to an array of birds such as Painted Storks, Glossy Ibises, Teals, and Red-crested Pochards among others, especially during the winter season when birds from as far as Siberia make their way here. The sanctuary was established under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 to safeguard the habitat for resident and migratory birds.
