Mecca Masjid, located in Hyderabad, Telangana, India, is one of the oldest and most significant mosques in the country. The mosque's construction started in 1614 during the reign of Sultan Muhammad Qutb Shah, the 6th Qutb Shahi Sultan of Golconda, and was completed by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1694. It is a majestic structure that can hold up to 10,000 worshippers. It derives its name from the Mecca bricks used to build the central arch, which were made from the soil brought from Mecca, the holiest site of Islam. The mosque's grand arches, large prayer hall, and its proximity to historical landmarks such as Charminar and the Laad Bazaar contribute to its grandeur and cultural significance. Mecca Masjid is not only a place of religious worship but also a monument of great architectural and historical worth, reflecting Hyderabad's rich past and its composite culture.
