Best Time To Visit Mekong River Dolphin Site (Kampong Cham) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Makóng Kbál Rôhaal, Kampong Cham

The Mekong River Dolphin Site in Kampong Cham, Cambodia, also known as Makóng Kbál Rôhaal, is a phenomenal destination for nature enthusiasts and wildlife watchers. The optimal time to visit is during the dry season, which spans from November through May. During these months, the water levels of the Mekong River are lower, leading to more concentrated areas where the dolphins tend to gather. This increases the chances of sighting the elusive Mekong Irrawaddy dolphins. Moreover, the dry season boasts minimal rainfall, making boat trips on the river more pleasant and reducing the likelihood of travel disruptions. For the best experience, aim to visit in the early morning or late afternoon when the temperatures are cooler and the dolphins are most active.

In addition to favorable sighting conditions, visiting during the dry season also ensures better road conditions, making access to remote areas like the dolphin site easier for travelers. Furthermore, the weather during this period is generally sunny and hot, which is ideal for those looking to combine dolphin sightings with other outdoor activities like cycling or exploring nearby villages and temples. Mornings are particularly special as the gentle mist over the river can create a serene environment, allowing for mesmerizing photographic opportunities and a tranquil experience observing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Just remember to stay protected from the sun as the heat can become intense around midday.
