The Nanjing City Wall in Nanjing, China, represents one of the largest ancient city walls ever constructed. Built during the Ming dynasty, under the order of the Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang in the late 14th century, it was designed to provide protection against invaders. The wall extends over 25 kilometers and once encircled the entire city. Although significant portions have been demolished over the years, the remaining sections have been preserved and are now an iconic historical site. The wall is made of massive bricks and stones, with a broad top that allows for walking along the ramparts, offering a distinct way to view the city. The design reflects both the military strategy of ancient times and the grandeur of Chinese architectural traditions. Cultural relics, such(lock) as the ancient city gates, still stand as a testimony to the city's rich history. The wall has also become a popular spot for recreational activities among locals and tourists alike, providing a unique bridge between past and present.
Exiting from the North Gate at Jiming Temple leads one to the Old City Wall.
Looks like a less grand version of the one in Xi'An, this ??? with its unique 4-tier structure, is said to be the longest ..
It’s amazing how quiet and relaxing the walk can be after a few hundred meters from the entry point. The walk along the wall and around the lake is just beautiful.
