Must-Try Foods In Naples (Italy) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Naples, Italy

The city of Naples, with its rich and vibrant history, is the birthplace of one of the world's most beloved dishes – pizza. Its culinary history is steeped in cultural exchanges and the bounty provided by the fertile volcanic soil of the region. In the 18th century, Naples was a thriving waterfront city and witnessed many vendors offering affordable street snacks, which led to the creation of foods that could be eaten on the go, such as pizza. Pizza, specifically, evolved from a flatbread dish known as "picea" which was enjoyed by the working class, to what we now recognize as the modern pizza after the addition of tomatoes in the late 18th century.

Besides pizza, Naples' food culture takes heavy influence from the surrounding Campania region, with a focus on fresh produce, seafood, cheeses like Mozzarella di Bufala, and traditional pasta dishes. Naples' cooking methods are rooted in *cuccina povera* or "poor kitchen," emphasizing the use of simple, high-quality ingredients to create dishes that are both flavorful and accessible.
