Best Time To Visit Oktoberfest And Theresienwiese (Munich) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Oktoberfest

The optimal time to visit Oktoberfest in Munich is during the festival's official dates which usually span from late September to the first weekend in October. Specifically, to experience this quintessential Bavarian festival, you should aim to arrive within the first few days of the event's commencement. During this period, the atmosphere is electric with excitement for the opening parades and the traditional tapping of the first beer keg by the Munich mayor, an event that officially starts the festival. Visitors should also consider attending on weekdays rather than weekends to avoid the heaviest crowds, and visiting the beer tents early in the day to secure a spot as they can fill up quickly. Keep in mind that the second weekend, known as "Italian Weekend", tends to draw a particularly high number of visitors from Italy, which further boosts the international flavor of the festival but also increases the crowd sizes.

Exploring Theresienwiese Outside of Oktoberfest

If you're not visiting Munich during Oktoberfest, the Theresienwiese venue is accessible year-round and offers a completely different experience when it's not hosting the famed beer festival. The area, named after Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, is a large open space that hosts various smaller events and markets throughout the year, including the Spring Festival, also known as the "Little Sister of the Oktoberfest," and the Tollwood Festival in the winter. For those interested in the history and tradition of the festival, the Oktoberfest Museum is open year-round and provides an in-depth look into the origins and evolution of this beloved event. However, if you're specifically interested in attending the Oktoberfest, consider booking accommodations well in advance, as lodging can become scarce and prices often increase significantly as the festival draws closer.
