Pha That Luang, also known as the Great Stupa, is a gold-covered large Buddhist stupa in the center of Vientian, Laos. Being the most significant national monument in Laos and a national symbol, the stupa has a structure that is rich in Lao culture and identity, reflecting the Buddhism influence in the region. Originally established in the 3rd century, Pha That Luang has undergone several reconstructions, the latest being in the 1930s due to foreign invasions. This impressive stupa is about 44 meters tall and is believed to contain a relic of the Buddha. Its architecture features a pyramidal base with steps leading to a series of terraces, which symbolize the journey from the earth to the sky, as well as the Buddhist path towards enlightenment. The entire complex is surrounded by a high wall and includes several temples and shrines. The site gathers numerous pilgrims each year, especially during the That Luang Festival, a Buddhist celebration that occurs in November.
