Patuxai, also known as the Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph, is a war monument in the heart of Vientiane, the capital of Laos. This imposing structure is dedicated to those who fought for independence from France. Completed in 1968, Patuxai has been inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, but it's uniquely Laotian, featuring typical Lao motifs and mythical creatures. Visitors can admire its elaborate architecture, including the four arches and five towers, which represent the four elements of earth, water, fire, and air, as well as the spirit of the nation. The ceilings of the interior towers are decorated with paintings of Hindu gods, and the central ceiling depicts a three-headed elephant, which is a symbol of the three former Lao kingdoms. The monument also houses a museum and several souvenir shops. From the top, one can enjoy panoramic views of the city. The beauty of Patuxa is also accentuated by the musical fountain on its grounds, which is a popular site for locals and tourists alike.
