Raja Maidam is a historical site located in Jorhat, Assam, which serves as the mausoleum of the Ahom king Purandar Singha. This sacred burial ground is part of Ahom tradition, where members of royalty were laid to rest in maidams, or burial mounds. Raja Maidam not only showcases the royal past of Assam but also is a notable example of the architectural and cultural heritage of the Ahom dynasty, which ruled the region for approximately 600 years from the 13th to the 19th century. Surrounded by lush greenery, this tranquil spot is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The area is adorned with well-preserved dome-shaped mounds that are covered in grass and sometimes encircled by brick walls. The serene atmosphere at Raja Maidam is a stark contrast to the bustling life of Jorhat city, offering a reflective experience to its visitors. While the site itself is relatively modest, it forms an important part of Assam's history and is a testament to the ancient funerary customs of the region.
