Majuli Island, located in the Brahmaputra River in Assam, India, is famed as the world's largest river island. With diverse flora and fauna, it is an ecological haven and has been a cradle of Assamese culture for centuries. The island occupies an area of around 352 square kilometers and is home to several ethnic groups, with the Mishing tribe being the most prominent. The population practices agriculture, mainly rice cultivation, and weaves exquisite handlooms. The island is also known for its traditional monasteries called Satras, which are centers of Assamese culture, art, and spirituality. Majuli's rich cultural landscape includes the art of mask-making, pottery, and traditional dance forms. In recent times, the island faces existential threats from soil erosion and climate change, with significant portions of land being lost to the river each year. UNESCO has been considering Majuli for a World Heritage Site status, recognizing its unique cultural and natural significance.
