The Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, nestled in Jorhat, Assam, is a unique preserve dedicated primarily to the protection of the Hoolock gibbon, India’s only ape species. Spread across an area of about 20.98 square kilometers, this sanctuary is an epitome of Assam's lush biodiversity. It was initially constituted as a reserved forest in 1881 and later given the status of a sanctuary in 1997. Besides the Hoolock gibbons, the area is home to a variety of other fauna, including several primates like the stump-tailed macaque, pig-tailed macaque, Assamese macaque, rhesus macaque, and the capped langur. Diverse flora comprises of Assam's tropical evergreen forests and also features a mixture of wet evergreen forests and semi-evergreen forests. This dense canopy serves as a critical habitat for the primates and a host of other species, ensuring their survival and proliferation.
