A Brief History of Rangdum Monastery Tourism

Dating back to the 18th century, Rangdum Monastery, also known as Rangdum Gompa, has been a site of spiritual significance for the local population. However, the history of its tourism is much shorter. Tourism in Ladakh only began to develop significantly in the 1970s when adventurers and explorers sought the untamed beauty of the Trans-Himalayan region. Rangdum, with its austere beauty and rich cultural heritage, became one of the destinations for these intrepid travelers.

The areas surrounding Rangdum were largely inaccessible to the outside world until recent decades. With the improvement of infrastructure and connectivity in the Indian subcontinent, more visitors have been able to witness the pristine beauty of Rangdum Monastery. Initially visited only by those on treks or focused expeditions, Rangdum has slowly unveiled itself to various types of tourists, from the devout pilgrims to the wanderlust-driven backpackers.

Planning Your Visit

If you plan to visit Rangdum Monastery, it is important to consider the limited travel season - typically from late June to mid-October.
