Sindhudurg Fort, which stands on a rocky island known as Kurte, is an imposing fortification in the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Maharashtra, India. The fort was constructed by the Maratha ruler, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, in the late 17th century. With its massive walls and imposing bastions, it was built to protect the Maratha Empire from naval attacks by the Dutch, British, and Portuguese. The fort's architecture is a testament to Maratha engineering, featuring deep pits dug around the fort to serve as a defensive mechanism. The main entrance is concealed and approachable through a zigzag path. Visitors can see Shivaji's hand and footprints preserved on one of the walls as well as a temple dedicated to the Maratha deity Bhavani. A small fishing village bordering the fort adds a charming backdrop to this historic site.
