How To Reach Taitung

Traveling to Taitung, Taiwan

Taitung is an enchanting destination located on the southeast coast of Taiwan. Known for its unspoilt natural scenery, rich indigenous culture, and serene beaches, Taitung is a perfect getaway for travellers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Below are the primary modes of transportation that you can use to reach Taitung.

By Air

The fastest way to get to Taitung is by air. Taitung has its own airport, Taitung Airport (TTT), which services daily flights from Taiwan's major cities such as Taipei and Kaohsiung. Once you arrive at the airport, you can take a taxi, rental car, or local bus to reach the city center or other destinations within the region.

By Train

Taitung is well-connected by Taiwan’s railway network. The East Line of the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) passes through Taitung, connecting it to various parts of the island. There are several types of trains you can take, including the express train (Tze-Chiang Limited Express) which offers a faster journey. You can board these trains from major cities like Taipei, which may take approximately 3.5 to 5 hours to reach Taitung depending on the type of train.

By Bus

Long-distance buses offer an alternative means of transportation. Several bus companies operate routes between Taitung and other major Taiwanese cities. Although the travel time might be longer compared to trains, buses can be a more economical choice and may provide more flexible departure times. It's important to check the latest schedules and book your tickets in advance.

By Car

If you are comfortable driving, renting a car is a viable option, especially if you want to explore the Taitung region at your own pace. The drive is scenic and allows for stops along the east coast of Taiwan. From Taipei, you can follow the Provincial Highway 9 which is the main route that traverses through the eastern part of the island to Taitung.

Travel Tips:

  • Plan and book your transportation in advance, especially during peak travel seasons or local festivals.
  • Check the weather conditions prior to your trip as Taitung is susceptible to typhoons during the summer and monsoon seasons.
  • Consider purchasing a travel pass, such as the Taiwan Rail Pass, for convenient train travel if you plan to explore more of Taiwan by rail.

Enjoy your trip to the beautiful region of Taitung!
