Best Time To Visit Toshogu Shrine (Nikko) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Toshogu Shrine, Nikko, Japan

Spring (late April to early May) is undoubtedly one of the best times to visit Toshogu Shrine in Nikko. During this period, you'll have the marvelous opportunity to witness the lush surroundings of the shrine bloom with pink and white cherry blossoms, creating a picturesque and serene atmosphere. The temperate climate is perfect for exploring the extensive grounds without the discomfort of summer heat or winter chill. The shrine's annual spring festival, the Shunki Reitaisai, takes place in May and includes a procession of participants dressed in traditional samurai armor, making it an exceptionally vibrant and culturally rich time to visit.

Another phenomenal time to visit is Autumn (mid-October to early November), when the surrounding hillsides are ablaze with fiery autumn colors. The Japanese maples turn vivid hues of crimson and gold, offering a breathtaking backdrop to the intricately carved wooden structures of the shrine. This season is also less crowded compared to spring, providing a more tranquil experience. However, it's also popular for koyo (autumn leaf viewing), so planning ahead is advisable to get the most out of your visit. Additionally, the mild weather during this season makes for comfortable walking conditions as you explore the extensive and historical beauty Toshogu Shrine has to offer.
