History of Tourism at the Two Towers

The Two Towers of Bologna, known as the Due Torri, stand as one of the most emblematic landmarks in the medieval city of Bologna, Italy. These towers, named Asinelli and Garisenda, were constructed in the 12th century and have been attracting visitors for centuries. Over the years, these structures have become an integral part of the city's historical identity and skyline.

Initially built by prominent families as symbols of power and prestige, the towers served both defensive and status signaling purposes. However, it was not until the Grand Tour era, during the 18th and 19th centuries, that the towers gained significant attention as a tourist attraction. Travelers from across Europe visiting Italy made it a point to experience the panoramic views of Bologna from the Asinelli Tower, which is the taller of the two.

The 20th century brought in waves of both domestic and international tourists, eager to explore Bologna's rich cultural heritage, cuisine, and its iconic towers. The appreciation for the city's medieval architecture rose significantly after World War II, with preservation efforts ensuring that the towers would remain a central feature of Bologna's identity.
