The Walled City of Lahore, Lahore, Pakistan

Historical Significance

The Walled City of Lahore, also known as the "Old City," or "Androon Shehr" (Inner City), is steeped in centuries of history, with its origins dating back to the legendary times of Lord Rama. The city has been a hub for various civilizations, from the Ghaznavids and Mughals to the Sikhs and the British Empire, each adding layers of cultural and architectural influence.

Tourism History and Development

Over time, the Walled City of Lahore evolved into a prominent cultural hub. Tourism specifically began to flourish in the colonial era when the British Raj opened the city to global travelers, showcasing its unique blend of South Asian history. However, it wasn't until Pakistan's independence in 1947 that the sites within the Walled City, such as the Lahore Fort and the Badshahi Mosque, were nationally recognized as important heritage locations.

The government of Pakistan, along with international organizations, began concerted efforts to preserve and promote the historic precinct of Lahore in the late 20th century. The creation of the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) in 2012 marked a significant turning point in these efforts, as the body was tasked with conservation and tourism development within the Walled City.
