Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn, is one of Bangkok's most famous landmarks located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. Here are the best ways to reach this stunning temple:
The most scenic and popular way to reach Wat Arun is by river boat. You can take a boat from the Saphan Taksin boat pier (Sathorn Pier), which is easily accessible by the BTS Skytrain (Saphan Taksin Station). Once at the pier, take the Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Tien Pier (N8). From Tha Tien Pier, Wat Arun is just a short ferry ride across the river.
From Tha Tien Pier, you will take a cross-river ferry that costs only a few bahts and takes just a few minutes. The ferry operates from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily.
Public buses that stop near Wat Arun include numbers: 19, 57, 83, and 507. Buses in Bangkok are an economical but less tourist-friendly option due to the city's traffic congestion and language barriers.
Taxis and tuk-tuks are readily available throughout Bangkok. Make sure to use a metered taxi or agree on a fare before you set off on your journey to avoid being overcharged. Tuk-tuks are a fun and traditional form of transportation, but fares should always be negotiated beforehand.
If you prefer a more comfortable journey, hiring a private car or using ride-hailing applications like Grab can be a convenient choice. They offer a fixed price and can take you directly to the temple.
Wat Arun is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. The entrance fee is around 50 Thai baht for foreign visitors. Although the Temple of Dawn is the temple’s nickname, it's equally beautiful at sunset or when it’s lit up at night.
Take note that dress codes apply to this and all temples in Thailand. Visitors should wear clothing that covers the shoulders and knees. Sarongs are typically available for rent at the temple entrance if needed.
