Wiang Kum Kam is an ancient city located in the Saraphi District of Chiang Mai, Thailand. It is situated along the banks of the Ping River and is known for its archaeological and historical significance. The city was founded by King Mangrai in the 13th century as the capital before the establishment of Chiang Mai. Throughout the site, visitors can find remnants of old temples, Buddhist sculptures, and pottery, which provide a glimpse into the past civilization. Excavations have revealed structures such as Wat Chedi Liam, Wat Kan Thom, and Wat E-Kang. The area was once a thriving trade and administrative center but was abandoned in the 16th century due to flooding. It wasn’t rediscovered until the 1980s. Today, Wiang Kum Kam is an open museum and has become a popular attraction for both locals and tourists. Visitors can explore the site on foot, by bicycle, or even on a horse-drawn carriage. The serene atmosphere, coupled with rich history, makes it a must-visit for anyone interested in the Lanna period of Thai history.
