Seven Sisters Zoos and Rescue Centres

If you are planning a family trip, a slow wildlife circuit, or a rainy-day add-on to your Northeast itinerary, the Seven Sisters have more to offer than forests and viewpoints. Their zoos, rescue centres, and wildlife rehabilitation spaces give you a practical way to see native species up close while learning how conservation works in this part of India.

This guide is for you if you want to visit thoughtfully, travel with children, or simply choose the right wildlife stop in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, or Tripura. You will find the most useful places to visit, what each one is good for, how to plan your time, and what to keep in mind before you go.

Why zoos and rescue centres matter in the Seven Sisters

In the Northeast, wildlife tourism is often linked to national parks, birding trails, and river safaris. Zoos and rescue centres play a different but equally important role. They are the places where injured, orphaned, or confiscated animals are treated, and where school groups and travellers can learn about species that live in the region’s forests, wetlands, and hill slopes.

You should think of these places as education-first stops rather than entertainment parks. The best ones are compact, local, and designed to make you notice the region’s biodiversity: hoolock gibbons, hornbills, clouded leopards, deer, turtles, and many birds and reptiles. If you are travelling with children or older family members, they also offer easier access than remote sanctuaries.

Top places to include in your Seven Sisters wildlife circuit

The Seven Sisters do not have one single “best” zoo. Instead, the value lies in matching the stop to your route. Some places are proper zoological parks, some are rescue and rehabilitation centres, and some are smaller conservation spaces attached to a park or forest reserve.

Place	State	Best for	Typical visit time
Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden	Assam	Largest zoo in the region, family visits, easy city access	2-4 hours
Balaji Temple Rescue Centre / nearby animal care facilities in Guwahati area	Assam	Short stop if included in a city day; confirm current access	1-2 hours
Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary and Zoo	Tripura	Mixed zoo-plus-sanctuary experience, birding, primates	3-5 hours
Thenzawl Deer Park	Mizoram	Relaxed nature stop in western Mizoram	1-2 hours
Local rescue and rehabilitation centres in Imphal and surrounding areas	Manipur	Conservation learning, if access is open to visitors	Depends on permissions

Because access rules can change, especially for rescue centres, confirm opening hours and visitor entry before you build your plan around them. Some facilities welcome visitors only during certain hours or on prior permission.

Assam: the strongest zoo stop in the Northeast

If you are starting anywhere in the Seven Sisters, Assam is usually the easiest place to begin. Guwahati has the region’s most established zoo infrastructure, and it is simple to combine with a city stay, a Brahmaputra cruise, or a trip toward Kaziranga, Pobitora, or Shillong.

Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden, Guwahati

This is the most important zoo in the Northeast for most travellers. Set over a large green area in Guwahati, it houses a broad collection of native and non-native species, and the botanical garden gives you extra shade and a more relaxed walk. It is particularly useful if you are travelling with children who need something structured between longer road journeys.

You can expect to spend about 2-4 hours here, more if you want to walk slowly and stop for photography. The best months to visit are October to March, when the weather is pleasant. In the hotter months, plan your visit early in the morning so you are not walking in the midday sun.

Entry fees and parking charges are usually modest, but they can change, so check the latest rates locally before you go. If you are relying on public transport, a city taxi or app cab from central Guwahati is the simplest option. From the airport, travel time can be around 30-45 minutes depending on traffic.

Wildlife learning around Guwahati

Guwahati also works well as a base for rescue-centre style learning, birdwatching, and conservation visits in the wider region. Some facilities are not public zoos in the usual sense, so you may need to verify whether a site accepts casual visitors or only organised groups. This matters because many rescue spaces prioritise animal care over tourism.

Tripura: a practical family stop at Sepahijala

Tripura often gets less attention than Assam, but for a traveller who wants a compact wildlife outing, Sepahijala is a very good fit. It combines sanctuary features, a zoo-like experience, and a green setting that feels easy to manage in half a day.

Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary and Zoo

Located not far from Agartala, Sepahijala is one of the most useful wildlife stops in the Seven Sisters for families and first-time visitors. It is known for its greenery, birds, primates, and the chance to see several species without committing to a full-day forest safari. Depending on how you move through the park, you can spend 3-5 hours here.

From Agartala city, road travel is usually straightforward, and the sanctuary works well as a morning outing. If you are visiting in winter, the cooler air makes the walk much more comfortable. In monsoon months, paths can be damp or slippery, so wear footwear with decent grip.

Tripura’s wildlife facilities are most enjoyable when you pair them with a larger itinerary, such as Ujjayanta Palace, Neermahal, or a city food trail. That way your day feels balanced rather than crowded with only one activity.

Mizoram: quieter, lighter wildlife stops

Mizoram is not known for large zoological parks, but it does offer smaller, calmer places that suit slow travellers. These are good if you want a short break during a road trip or if you are staying near Aizawl or western Mizoram and want a simple outing rather than a long excursion.

Thenzawl Deer Park and nearby nature spaces

Thenzawl is one of the easier nature stops to recommend in Mizoram because it sits along a scenic route and does not demand a complicated plan. The deer park is not a high-intensity wildlife destination, but it gives you a pleasant pause, especially if you are already visiting Thenzawl’s waterfalls, handloom centres, or nearby viewpoints.

Expect a short visit of about 1-2 hours. It is best treated as part of a wider day trip rather than a destination on its own. If you are travelling with older parents or younger children, this gentler pace can be a welcome change from longer hill drives.

Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh: focus on rescue and conservation

These states are not really zoo destinations in the conventional sense. Their appeal lies more in wildlife rehabilitation, conservation centres, and access to the wider ecological landscape. For you as a traveller, that means you may find smaller facilities rather than large public zoos.

Manipur

In and around Imphal, conservation organisations and animal care centres may be available for school visits, guided visits, or special permission-based stops. Because public access can vary, do not assume a rescue centre is open for walk-in tourism. Instead, plan to ask your hotel, local guide, or tourism office before setting the visit in stone.

Nagaland

Nagaland’s wildlife appeal is stronger in its forests, community reserves, and birding zones than in formal zoos. If a local rescue or rehabilitation facility is on your route, treat it as a bonus rather than the main event. Pair it with a trip to Dimapur, Kohima, or nearby forest trails for a more satisfying day.

Meghalaya

Meghalaya is famous for caves, waterfalls, and clean hill drives, so zoos are not the main attraction. If you want a conservation-style stop, look for local wildlife or bird rescue initiatives around Shillong or on the way to nearby nature areas. Always confirm access in advance, especially in the monsoon season when travel plans can change quickly.

Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal’s wildlife experiences are usually larger in scale and more remote, with a stronger focus on forests, sanctuaries, and species-rich habitats. Rescue-centre style stops may exist in specific districts, but they are generally not the kind of place you add casually to a first-time tourist itinerary. If you do include one, make sure it fits your road route and permits are sorted well in advance.

How to plan your visit smartly

The most common mistake travellers make is trying to squeeze too many wildlife stops into one Northeast trip. Because distances are often longer than they appear on the map, it is better to choose one major zoo or rescue centre and build around it.

1. Pick one base city. Guwahati, Agartala, or Aizawl work best depending on your route.
2. Keep one half-day aside. A zoo or rescue stop usually takes longer than expected because of the walk, rest breaks, and photo stops.
3. Go early. Morning visits are cooler and usually more comfortable for animals and visitors.
4. Carry cash as backup. Entry fees, parking, or local snacks may not always be digital-first.
5. Check rules first. Rescue centres may require permission or may limit access on certain days.

Best time of year

For most of the Seven Sisters, October to March is the safest and most pleasant window for zoo and rescue visits. Summer can be hot and tiring in the plains, while monsoon travel may slow you down on hill roads and make open-air walking less comfortable. If you are visiting in July or August, keep your day flexible and avoid overloading it.

What it may cost

A zoo or rescue-centre day in the Seven Sisters is usually not an expensive outing, especially if you are travelling independently. The larger cost is often transport, not entry.

Expense	Indicative range
Entry ticket	?20-?100 per person, depending on the facility
Parking	?20-?100
Local taxi for half-day trip	?1,000-?3,000, depending on city and distance
Simple snacks and water	?100-?300 per person
Budget hotel near city base	?1,500-?3,500 per night

These are only indicative figures. Fees, transport rates, and opening hours change, so confirm the latest details before booking your stay or planning a day trip.

Travel tips for families, seniors, and first-time visitors

If you are travelling with children, choose places with clean walkways, shade, and easy exit points. Assam State Zoo and Sepahijala are usually better suited for this than remote rescue facilities with limited visitor infrastructure.

If you are travelling with seniors, look for shorter loops, seating, and parking close to the entrance. Carry water, sun protection, and light snacks, especially in warmer months. In the hills, a light jacket can be useful even during the day.

If this is your first Northeast trip, use the zoo or rescue centre as an introduction to the region’s fauna, not as your main wildlife experience. After that, you may want to extend your journey to national parks such as Kaziranga, Nameri, or Orang in Assam, or to birding and forest routes elsewhere in the Seven Sisters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best zoo in the Seven Sisters?

For most travellers, the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden in Guwahati is the best-known and most practical choice. It has stronger infrastructure, better city access, and a wider range of animals than most other zoo-style stops in the region. Still, if you are based in Tripura, Sepahijala may fit your trip better.

Are rescue centres open to regular tourists?

Not always. Many rescue and rehabilitation centres prioritise animal care and only allow limited or permission-based visits. You should check with local tourism offices, the facility itself, or your hotel before assuming you can walk in.

How much time should I keep for a zoo visit in the Northeast?

Keep at least half a day for a proper visit, especially if you are going with family or planning to stop for photographs. Larger places like Assam State Zoo or Sepahijala can easily take 2-5 hours depending on your pace. Smaller deer parks or conservation stops may take only 1-2 hours.

What is the best season to visit zoos and rescue centres in the Seven Sisters?

October to March is usually the most comfortable period. The weather is cooler, roads are generally easier, and walking around open enclosures is less tiring. Monsoon months can be beautiful but may make travel slower and the grounds wetter.

Can I combine a zoo visit with a longer Northeast tour?

Yes, and that is often the smartest way to do it. Guwahati fits well with Kaziranga or Meghalaya, while Agartala pairs nicely with Sepahijala and other Tripura sights. Build the zoo stop into a larger city or state circuit so your travel time feels worthwhile.

Are these places good for children?

Yes, especially the better-maintained zoos and compact parks. Children usually enjoy the variety and the chance to see regional wildlife they may only know from books or TV. Just choose a place with clean facilities, shade, and manageable walking distances.

The Seven Sisters offer a thoughtful wildlife experience if you know where to look. A zoo or rescue-centre visit here is not about rushing through enclosures; it is about slowing down, learning the region’s ecology, and using your travel time well.

If you are planning a Northeast itinerary, add one or two of these stops and let them complement your forests, rivers, and hill drives rather than compete with them. If you found this guide useful, share the post with someone planning a trip to the Seven Sisters.
