Must-Try Foods In Agatti Island (Lakshadweep) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Agatti Island, Lakshadweep, India

The cuisine of Agatti Island and the Lakshadweep archipelago predominantly reflects the influence of the coastal and marine environment. The food habits of the locals have been shaped by the indigenous produce available on the islands, as well as by the trade and cultural exchanges with other coastal regions such as Kerala, which is geographically closest to the islands. The population, being primarily Muslim, sees a prevalence of halal food patterns and abstains from certain types of meat due to religious beliefs.

Coconuts and sea fish are staples in the islanders' diet, due to the abundant coconut trees and rich marine life surrounding the islands. The cuisine combines the fresh flavors of the sea with the rich tastes of coconut milk and oil. Over the centuries, as the islanders engaged in seafaring and trade, the culinary influences from Arab and other maritime trading cultures blended into their native cooking practices, forming a distinct and varied cuisine.
