Alchi Monastery, nestled in the lush greenery of the Leh District in Ladakh, India, is an ancient Buddhist monastic complex situated on the south bank of the Indus River. It is approximately 67 kilometers west of Leh at an altitude of 3,100 meters, making it one of the region's most significant and oldest monasteries. Founded by the great translator Guru Rinchen Zangpo in the 11th century, the monastery is renowned for its stunning frescoes and statues that showcase Indo-Tibetan and Kashmiri styles, stand as a testament to the historical Silk Route's cultural exchange. Unlike other monasteries in Ladakh, which are typically located on hilltops, Alchi is sited on flat ground. The complex includes three major shrines: the Dukhang (Assembly hall), the Sumtsek (three-tiered temple), and the Temple of Manjushri, each ornately embellished with historical artwork that has been preserved over the centuries.
