Diskit Monastery is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery (gompa) in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh, northern India. Founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo in the 14th century, it belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Perched atop a hill at an altitude of 3,144 meters above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the Nubra Valley. The Monastery complex houses a statue of Maitreya Buddha in the prayer hall, a huge drum, and several images of guardian deities. It is renowned for its gigantic 32-meter statue of Maitreya Buddha which is visible from afar and symbolizes the protection and preservation of the dharma in the Nubra Valley. Diskit Monastery also preserves a rich collection of artifacts, thangkas, and frescoes. The Monastery is a site of deep spiritual significance and a repository of ancient murals and books.
