Thiksey Monastery is an iconic Tibetan Buddhist monastery located on top of a hill at an altitude of approximately 3,600 meters above sea level, in the Thiksey village, which is about 19 kilometers east of Leh in Ladakh, India. Resembling the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, this 12-story complex houses many items of Buddhist art such as stupas, statues, thangkas, wall paintings, and swords. The monastery is affiliated with the Gelug sect of Tibetan Buddhism and features a Maitreya Temple installed to commemorate the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama. The Maitreya statue is the largest in Ladakh, spanning two stories of the building. The monastery's architecture, prayer flags fluttering in the wind, and the sound of monks chanting create an ambiance of peace and spirituality. With its panoramic views of the lush Indus valley below, Thiksey Monastery also hosts the Gustor Festival, which is marked by sacred mask dances and prayers, attracting a large number of tourists and devotees each year.
