Leh Palace, often compared to the Potala Palace of Lhasa, Tibet, is a former royal palace overlooking the Ladakhi Himalayan town of Leh. Constructed in the 17th century by King Sengge Namgyal, this nine-story dun-colored edifice has withstood the test of time, although it now stands mostly in ruins. The palace is an exemplary specimen of medieval Tibetan architecture, composed of wood and stone, with thick walls that bear the brunt of harsh winters. It features massive wooden balconies and is crowned with golden stupas. Inside, the palace houses a museum showcasing a rich collection of jewelry, ornaments, ceremonial dresses, and crowns. Thangka paintings, some over 450 years old, adorn the walls with vibrant colors and intricate designs, depicting the fine craftsmanship of the era. The upper floors provide panoramic views of the Stok Kangri mountains and Leh town, including a stunning view of the Namgyal Tsemo Gompa. Although mostly uninhabited, the Leh Palace still emanates an aura of regal splendor and serves as an epitome of the rich cultural heritage of Ladakh.
