Getting to Ama Dablam

International Arrival
Your journey to Ama Dablam will begin with an international flight to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. From Kathmandu, you will need to make your way to the town of Lukla, which is the common starting point for treks and expeditions in the Everest region.

Domestic Flight to Lukla
From Kathmandu, you’ll take a scenic domestic flight to Lukla Airport (Tenzing-Hillary Airport), which is famous for being one of the most dangerous airports in the world due to its short runway and surrounding mountainous terrain. The flight takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

Trek to Ama Dablam Base Camp
Upon arriving in Lukla, you’ll begin your trek to Ama Dablam Base Camp. Typically, the trek involves several days of hiking through the famous Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar and other scenic villages like Pangboche and Dingboche, allowing you to acclimatize properly to the high altitude. The usual itinerary includes the following stops:

  • Day 1: Flight to Lukla and trek to Phakding
  • Day 2: Trek to Namche Bazaar
  • Day 3: Acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar
  • Day 4: Trek to Tengboche or Pangboche
  • Day 5: Trek to Dingboche
  • Day 6: Acclimatization day in Dingboche
  • Day 7: Trek to Ama Dablam Base Camp
The trek to base camp typically takes approximately one week and unfolds through lush valleys, traditional Sherpa villages, and alongside the raging Dudh Kosi River, with rest days woven in to allow for acclimatization.

Essential Tips and Information

Permits: To trek in the Sagarmatha National Park, you will need a Sagarmatha National Park Permit and a TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card. These can be obtained either in Kathmandu or upon arrival in the town of Monjo, which is the entrance to the park. Best Season: The best time to trek to Ama Dablam is during the pre-monsoon season (March to May) and post-monsoon season (September to November) when the weather is more stable and the views are clearer. Guides and Porters: It is advisable to hire a professional Nepali guide and/or porter who can lead the way, assist with carrying luggage, and enhance your understanding of the local culture and environment. Altitude Sickness: Acclimatize properly and be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness. Insurance: Ensure you have adequate travel and high-altitude insurance before embarking on your journey.
