Type of destination: Mountain/Peak
Imja Tse, better known as Island Peak, is a stunning mountain located in the Sagarmatha National Park in the Khumbu region of northeastern Nepal. At an elevation of 6,189 meters (20,305 feet), it is used as an acclimatization climb for those preparing to summit Everest, though it is also a popular trekking peak in its own right. Named Island Peak in 1953 by members of the British Everest Expedition due to its resemblance to an island in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche, the peak offers climbers a challenging and rewarding ascent with breathtaking views of the Himalayas. From the base camp, the ascent involves glacier travel, a steep climb up a snow and ice slope, and a final sharp summit ridge. Climbers experience spectacular sights of surrounding Himalayan giants including Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, and Ama Dablam. Due to its high altitude, acclimatization and proper preparation are essential for anyone attempting to climb Island Peak.
