Travel Guide to Amami Islands, Kagoshima, Japan

Welcome to the Amami Islands of Kagoshima Prefecture, a stunning archipelago in Japan known for its lush forests, vibrant coral reefs, and rich cultural heritage. Reaching these remote islands involves a few steps, but the journey is well worth it to experience their untouched natural beauty.

Accessing Amami Islands

By Air:

• The easiest and fastest way to reach the Amami Islands is by air. Amami Oshima, the largest island in the group, has Amami Airport (ASJ) which is well-connected with multiple daily flights from major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kagoshima on airlines such as Japan Airlines (JAL) and Vanilla Air.
• Other islands such as Kikai, Tokunoshima, Okinoerabu, and Yoron also have their own airports with regular flights from Kagoshima and occasionally other cities.

By Sea:

• If you prefer to travel by sea, you can take a ferry from Kagoshima to various islands in the archipelago. The Ferry Toshima provides regular service to Amami Oshima, Tokunoshima, Okinoerabu, and Yoron Islands. The journey can take anywhere from 7 to 26 hours depending on the destination and the route taken.
• Booking a cabin for overnight journeys is highly recommended for comfort, and reservations can be made in advance online or through travel agencies. Make sure to check the ferry schedule and availability prior to your travel, as it can be affected by weather conditions and seasons.

Travel Tips:

• English may not be widely spoken on the Amami Islands, so having a basic understanding of Japanese or a translation app could be helpful.
• Rental cars are a popular and convenient way to explore the larger islands, like Amami Oshima, but make sure you have an international driving permit if you’re from outside Japan.
• For those interested in traditional culture, visit Kasarizaki Lighthouse or engage in a craft-making experience like Oshima Tsumugi silk weaving, which the islands are famous for.

Whether you're an avid bird watcher, a fan of scuba diving, or simply seeking tranquility, the Amami Islands are a remarkable destination. Plan your trip well, and you'll be rewarded with unforgettable memories of Japan’s natural splendor.
