Ananteshwar Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in the town of Udupi, Karnataka, India. It is one of the oldest temples in the region, believed to be over 1,000 years old. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, known here as Ananteshwara or Anantesvara. It features typical Dravidian architecture with a simple yet elegant gopuram (tower). The inner sanctum, or garbhagriha, houses the lingam representing Lord Shiva. Ananteshwar Temple is considered the spiritual foundation upon which the Krishna Mutt (temple complex) was established. Positioned near the Madhwa Sarovara pond, the temple exhibits a tranquil environment suitable for worship and reflection. The walls and pillars of the temple are adorned with carvings and inscriptions that narrate various legends associated with the deity and temple history. Additionally, Ananteshwar Temple plays a crucial role in the Udupi Chariot Festival, as it marks the location where the idols are bathed before the procession. The temple's serene ambiance is complemented by the chanting of mantras and the ringing of bells, creating a deeply spiritual experience.
