Must-Try Foods In Baths Of Caracalla (Rome) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Baths of Caracalla, Rome, Italy

The Baths of Caracalla were an indulgent complex of public baths in ancient Rome, built between AD 212 and 216 during the reign of the Emperor Caracalla. While the baths themselves were a place of relaxation and socialization, featuring hot and cold baths, gymnasiums, and libraries, they also relate to the broader gastronomic culture of Rome. Ancient Roman meals typically consisted of three parts: the "ientaculum" (a light breakfast), the "prandium" (a quick lunch), and the "cena" (the main meal).

During the heyday of the Baths of Caracalla, visitors might engage in feasts or small meals after their bathing routines. Food during that period included simple fare like bread, cheese, olives, and dried fruits to more elaborate meals featuring meats, sauces, wine, and spices from across the empire. Although the exact dishes served at that time are a mystery, we can infer that patrons of the baths enjoyed a diverse array of Roman cuisine reflective of the empire's affluence.
