The Bhaja Caves are a cluster of 22 rock-cut caves dating back to the 2nd century BC located in Lonavala, Maharashtra, India. These ancient Buddhist shrines are among the oldest caves in India, similar to the more famous Karla Caves nearby. The caves are situated on a major ancient trade route, running from the Arabian Sea eastward into the Deccan Plateau. The most prominent among the caves is Cave 18, which features a spectacular chaitya (prayer hall) with a stupa. The interiors are adorned with intricate carvings, depicting various deities and dancing figures. Apart from the chaitya, there are several viharas (monasteries) with living spaces for monks. A unique feature of Bhaja Caves is its group of 14 stupas, which represent the remains of monks who resided here. The caves are set against a backdrop of greenery and provide a tranquil retreat from the bustling towns nearby.
