Buxa Tiger Reserve is in the northeastern corner of West Bengal, bordered by Bhutan and Assam. Established in 1983, it was declared a tiger reserve in 1983 and gained national park status by 1992. Spanning across 757.90 square kilometers, the reserve boasts rich biodiversity and an extensive tropical forest cover. It's part of the larger contiguous forests that include the Sinchula hill range and forms a crucial international corridor for elephant migration between India and Bhutan. The terrain is hilly and crisscrossed by rivers and rivulets. It hosts a mix of dry and moist deciduous forests including sal, champa, simul, and sishu trees. Wildlife includes Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, leopards, and several species of deer and birds. The reserve also plays a pivotal role in protecting the 'Rajabhatkhawa' and is an attraction for its historical significance with the remnants of 'Buxa Fort' – once a prison for freedom fighters during the British regime.
