Dobji Dzong is an ancient fortress located in the verdant Paro district of Bhutan. Standing atop a hill at an elevation of about 6,600 feet, it overlooks the scenic, lush landscape of the Haa valley. This historic dzong was built in 1531 by Ngawang Chogyal, a prince from the Drukpa lineage, making it one of Bhutan’s oldest dzongs. It served as a defensive fortress and a seat of power and administration. Dobji Dzong is reputed to be the first model Dzong in Bhutan, upon which the architecture of later dzongs was based. Unlike many other fortresses in Bhutan, Dobji Dzong does not serve as a monastic or administrative center today. Instead, it houses a jail. The architecture exemplifies traditional Bhutanese styles with whitewashed walls, wooden elements, and the prominent use of intricate traditional paintings. Hiking up to the dzong offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in history while also enjoying the breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. The dzong's less touristy nature provides a sense of solitude and a deep connection with Bhutanese culture.
