Rinpung Dzong is a large Buddhist monastery and fortress in Paro, Bhutan, commanding a prominent place in the Paro valley. With walls towering over the landscape and a complex of courtyards, temples, administrative offices, and monks’ accommodation, it is a fine example of Bhutanese ecclesiastical architecture. The Dzong was constructed in the 16th century by Ngawang Namgyal on the foundation of a monastery laid down by Guru Rinpoche. Traditionally, it served as a defensive bastion against invading forces and now houses both the monastic body and district government offices. Its intricate wood carvings and emblazoned details throughout the complex add to its majesty. The annual Paro Tshechu, a religious festival, is held in Rinpung Dzong and attracts tourists and pilgrims alike. Visitors can explore the various chapels and temples, marvel at ancient murals and artifacts, or simply enjoy the panoramic views over the valley and the tranquil atmosphere.
