Must-Try Foods In Dobji Dzong (Paro) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Dobji Dzong, Paro, Bhutan

Dobji Dzong is a historic fortress located in Paro, Bhutan. Like the rest of the country, the food culture around Dobji Dzong has been heavily influenced by Tibetan cuisine, with Bhutanese regional variations and indigenous ingredients. The Bhutanese diet traditionally features rice, chili, cheese, and a variety of meats, with a strong emphasis on organic and homegrown produce. However, religious beliefs and the principles of Buddhism play a role in the type of meat consumed, which is why you will not find dishes that include cow meat, as cattle are considered sacred in Bhutan. Instead, you would find dishes with chicken, pork, and yak meat. Local cuisine also includes a range of vegetarian dishes which are particularly favored by those following a strict Buddhist diet.
