Kila Goenpa, also known as the Kila Gompa, is an ancient Buddhist nunnery nestled in the cliffs of Paro Valley in Bhutan. Situated at an altitude of about 3,500 meters above sea level, it is considered the oldest nunnery in Bhutan. This sacred sanctuary consists of seven small temples and several retreat huts built into a dizzying sheer cliff side. Founded in the 9th century by Dupthob Chhoeje Norbu and Dupthob Thangtong Gyalpo, it has been a meditation site for both monks and nuns for centuries. The nunnery complex is reached by a strenuous hike, which provides spectacular views of the Paro Valley and the snow-capped Himalayas. The serenity of its location makes it a perfect place for meditation and spiritual retreat. The interiors of the temples feature exquisite religious artwork, murals, and sculptures that reflect the rich Vajrayana Buddhist heritage. Kila Goenpa is an active nunnery where nuns live in self-imposed isolation to study, pray, and meditate.
