It was built by the Tibetan Buddhist saint, Thangtong Gyalpo, who is often accredited with introducing the art of opera to the region as well as constructing numerous iron bridges across the Himalayas. The temple is notable for its unique design, reflecting the chorten style which is rarely seen in Bhutan.
