Type of destination: Mountain Pass
Ideal visit duration: 2-4 hours
Hai Van Pass is a scenic mountain pass in Vietnam, often lauded as one of the most beautiful in the country. Stretching approximately 21 kilometers, it winds through the Annamite Range and overlooks the South China Sea, offering majestic views of the coastline. The name 'Hai Van' means 'Ocean Cloud' because the peak of the mountain is in the clouds while its foot is close to the sea. Historically, the Hai Van Pass served as a division between the kingdoms of Champa and Dai Viet. The pass is a physical and climatic boundary between Northern and Southern Vietnam and has been of strategic military significance over the centuries. Travelers today are drawn to this area for its breathtaking beauty, historical significance, and the thrilling experience of navigating the serpentine road. It is popular among motorcyclists and cyclists looking for a challenging and rewarding journey. With several lookout points along the route, visitors often stop to capture the stunning vistas. Hai Van Pass has become more accessible and less congested after the construction of the Hai Van Tunnel, which funnels most traffic away from the pass itself.
