Must-Try Foods In Kampot Pepper Plantations (Kampot) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Kampot Pepper Plantations, Kampot, Cambodia

Kampot pepper has a long and storied history that dates back to at least the 13th century, but it gained prominence in the international culinary scene during the 19th century. Under French colonial rule, the pepper's distinct quality and flavor were esteemed, and it became a significant export to fine dining establishments across Europe.

Due to the unique terroir of the Kampot region - the rich soil and climatic conditions - the pepper grown here boasts exceptional quality and aroma. Known as ‘the king of spices’, Kampot pepper comes in several varieties, such as black, green, red, and white, each with its distinct flavor profile.

The Khmer Rouge era tragically led to the decline of Kampot pepper cultivation, but since the 2000s, efforts to revive the industry have been successful. Kampot pepper gained Geographical Indication status in 2010, putting it on par with other protected regional products like Champagne and Parma Ham.
