Salt Fields Tourism

Type of destination: Cultural Site
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
Situated near the coastal town of Kampot in southern Cambodia, the Salt Fields are a unique agricultural area where local farmers harvest salt from the sea. Spanning over large flat plains, the fields consist of a grid of shallow pools that are filled with seawater. Over time, the sun and wind evaporate the water, leaving behind crystalline salt. Local workers then collect the salt into mounds, a picturesque scene against the backdrop of the distant Elephant Mountains. The fields provide a livelihood for many local farmers and contribute significantly to Cambodia's salt production. Visitors can witness this traditional method of salt farming, which has remained largely unchanged for generations. The Salt Fields are not only a place of economic importance but also a serene and educational experience, offering insight into a unique local industry. With sustainability in mind, the fields attract photographers, cultural enthusiasts, and travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences, with the opportunity to learn about the labor-intensive salt harvesting process and interact with the friendly local workers.
