Kaziranga National Park is a protected area in the northeast Indian state of Assam, spread across the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River. Its forests, wetlands, and grasslands are home to a large population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, which is its main attraction. Covering an area of 430 square kilometers, it also boasts high densities of tigers and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. Other key faunal species include large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. Kaziranga is recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International for the conservation of avifaunal species. It was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its unique natural environment. This park exemplifies the ongoing ecological and biological processes that have made the region a biodiversity hotspot.
