History of Tourism in Khajjiar

The beginning of tourism in Khajjiar can be traced back to the 7th century, with the establishment of the Khajji Nag temple dedicated to the serpent deity. It wasn't until the British colonial period that Khajjiar started gaining popularity as a tourist destination. The Britishers developed numerous hill stations in India, and Khajjiar, along with Dalhousie, became a summer retreat for the British officials seeking respite from the heat of the plains.

Post-independence, the Indian government and Himachal Pradesh Tourism Department promoted Khajjiar as a tourist destination. The region gained international recognition when, in 1992, Mr. Willy T. Blazer, Vice Counselor and Head of the Chancery of Switzerland in India, christened Khajjiar as the 'Mini Switzerland of India' and installed a yellow Swiss hiking footpath sign, indicating the distance from Khajjiar to the Swiss capital Bern-6194 km.
