Kila Goenpa, also known as Chele La Gompa or Kila Gompa, is a historic monastery situated in the serene mountains of Paro district in Bhutan. It is a nunnery and is considered one of the oldest of its kind.
Kila Goenpa is located on the slopes below Chele La pass, which is the highest motorable pass in Bhutan, between the valleys of Paro and Haa. Nestled at an altitude of about 3,500 meters (11,500 feet) above sea level, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
To reach Kila Goenpa, you can take a drive from Paro town up to Chele La pass. From there, it's about a one to two-hour hike down to the nunnery. The trail is steep but well marked and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Visitors to Kila Goenpa can explore the series of seven small temples and a number of retreat huts built into a rocky cliffside. This serene location is home to about 30 to 50 nuns who live in self-imposed isolation, dedicating their lives to spiritual pursuits. Tourists can observe the nuns' daily life, enjoy the architecture of the temples, and experience the peaceful environment.
There is typically no entrance fee to visit Kila Goenpa, but donations are welcome to support the maintenance of the nunnery and the livelihood of the nuns.
The best time to visit Kila Goenpa is from March to May and from September to November when the weather is clear and pleasant, offering beautiful views. The nunnery might be covered in snow during the winter months, making access more difficult.
While Kila Goenpa itself may not host large festivals, it is a place where you can witness the daily rituals and cultural practices of the nuns. However, numerous Bhutanese festivals (Tshechus) occur throughout the year in different monasteries and temples across Bhutan, which are vibrant and rich in cultural significance.
Tourists should dress modestly out of respect for the religious site and its inhabitants. It is also important to maintain silence within the temples to not disturb the nuns or other practitioners. Photography may be restricted in some areas, so it's best to ask for permission before taking pictures.
The hike to Kila Goenpa is considered moderate to challenging due to its steep and rugged terrain. It is advisable for hikers to be in good physical condition and to acclimatize to the altitude before attempting the trek.
Overnight stays at Kila Goenpa are generally not available for tourists. Visitors would need to arrange accommodation in Paro or nearby towns. Homestays in the Paro valley may provide a more immersive cultural experience.
