The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, nestled on the banks of the Vembanad Lake in Kerala, is a nature lover's paradise, particularly famous for its avian population. Spanning over 14 acres, the sanctuary is home to both local and migratory species. Visitors can immerse themselves in the lush greenery, meandering through designated paths to spot birds of various hues and calls. The region's tropical climate contributes to the rich biodiversity, offering a stunning backdrop of the serene backwaters. The sanctuary's mangrove forests, verdant fields, and nearby paddy fields create a unique ecosystem attracting winged beauties like Siberian storks, egret, darter, heron, and teal, especially during the migratory season from November to May. The houseboat or motorboat rides on the Vembanad Lake add to the charm, providing an intimate view of the sanctuary's wildlife while drifting through the tranquil waterways. Kumarakom's emphasis on eco-tourism ensures an enriching experience while preserving the delicate balance of its natural habitat.

Go in the winter only
Not many birds in September. I recommend going only when birds are here. Otherwise not much to see. Please don’t litter. It ruins the experience of others.
