Vembanad Lake is the longest lake in India and the largest in the state of Kerala. Stretching over an area of 2033 square kilometers, it spans several districts in Kerala, including Alappuzha, which is renowned for its picturesque backwaters. The lake is a confluence of several rivers and opens out into the Arabian Sea at the Kochi Port. The lake's serene beauty, coupled with the web of canals, deltas, isles, and backwaters present around it, make it a major tourist attraction. It is especially known for the annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race which takes place on the Punnamada Lake portion of Vembanad. The local economy relies heavily on this lake with agriculture, fishing, tourism, and inland navigation being the major contributors. It also houses the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, which is a favorite for avifauna enthusiasts. The lake's ecosystem supports a variety of flora and fauna, including the pearl spot fish, prawns, and other crustaceans.
