How To Reach Macao

Traveling to Macao, China

Macao, also known as Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (Macau SAR), is a vibrant city with a unique mix of Portuguese and Chinese cultures. It's located on the south coast of China, across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong.

By Air

To reach Macao by air, you will most likely fly into the Macao International Airport (MFM), which serves a host of international and regional flights. From the airport, you can take taxis, buses, or hotel shuttle services to get to your final destination in Macao.

From Hong Kong

Many travelers fly into Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and then transfer to Macao. There are several options to travel from Hong Kong to Macao:

  • TurboJet and Cotai Water Jet: These high-speed ferries run frequently from Hong Kong and can take you to Macao in approximately an hour. They operate from both the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal and the Hong Kong China Ferry Terminal.
  • Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB): This remarkable 55-kilometer bridge and tunnel system provides a direct link between Hong Kong, Macao, and Zhuhai. You can cross the bridge by shuttle bus or using a private vehicle service.

By Land from Mainland China

If you’re coming from mainland China, you can drive or take a bus across one of the three major bridges connecting Macao to Zhuhai. The border gates are:

  • Gongbei Border Gate: The main crossing point which operates between 06:00 and 01:00.
  • Hengqin Port: Open 24 hours.
  • Lotus Bridge: Operates from 09:00 to 20:00.

By Rail

The Guangzhou–Zhuhai Intercity Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) connects Macao to the Chinese railway network, with the closest stop in Zhuhai. From there, you can cross the border into Macao.

Visa Requirements

Make sure to check the visa requirements before planning your visit. Many countries’ residents can enter Macao visa-free for varying periods depending on the country of origin. It’s important to ensure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of your entry into Macao.

Getting Around Macao

Once in Macao, the public transportation system is easy to use with a network of buses that cover the entire region. Many visitors also choose to walk around the compact city, taking in the sights on foot. Taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced, while some hotels provide free shuttle service around Macao.
