Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, India. It lies between the Mahananda River and the Teesta River, sprawling across a diverse terrain with altitudes ranging from 150 to 1,300 meters. This sanctuary encompasses mixed-wet forests and riverine grasslands, making it a biodiversity hotspot. Established in 1959, the sanctuary was designed to protect the Bengal tiger and Indian elephants, among other fauna. Today, it is home to a rich variety of wildlife including leopards, barking deer, sambar, and numerous bird species. The sanctuary is also a haven for butterflies and a corridor for elephant migration between Nepal and Bengal. Visitors can venture into the reserve through several nature trails for bird watching and witnessing the beauty of the sub-Himalayan region. Rich in flora, Mahananda hosts a wide range of plant life, including sal, teak, and bamboo, set against the backdrop of the Eastern Himalayas. Environmental education and conservation efforts are actively promoted within the ecosystem of Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary.

You can book a car (jeep) to enjoy the safari in this sanctuary. While enjoying the safari please don't make too much noise because it can disturb the wild animal.
