How To Reach Makassar (Indonesia) In 2026 - 2027
Welcome to Makassar: Gateway to Eastern Indonesia
Makassar, formerly known as Ujung Pandang, is the provincial capital of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and serves as a major hub for travel to the eastern regions of the country. To help you plan your journey, here is the essential information on how to get to this bustling city:
By Air
Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG) is Makassar's main gateway and is well-connected domestically and internationally. Here's how you can fly into Makassar:
- Domestic Flights: There are frequent flights from major cities such as Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali, and many others across the Indonesian archipelago.
- International Flights: Direct flights are available from select destinations, including Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Connecting flights via Jakarta or Bali are common for travelers coming from further abroad.
By Sea
Makassar is also accessible by sea through the Soya Port and Makassar New Port. The city's ports are active with passenger and cargo ships, offering another mode to arrive in Makassar, particularly from neighboring islands and as part of longer cruise journeys.
By Land
Road travel to Makassar is an option for those coming from other parts of Sulawesi. Long-distance bus services connect Makassar with cities and regions across the island. However, due to the long distances and travel times, most travelers prefer air travel.
Getting to the City Center
Once you arrive at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport, there are several options to reach the city center:
- Taxis: They are readily available at the airport. It's recommended to use an official taxi service with fixed prices or a metered fare.
- Ride-hailing Apps: Services like Gojek and Grab are popular and can be more cost-effective options.
- Airport Buses: These buses offer an affordable way to reach the city, with stops in key areas.
If you choose to arrive by sea, both ports have taxi and ride-hailing app services to get you to your next destination within the city.
