Massacre Ghat (Satti Chaura Ghat) Tourism
Type of destination: Historical Landmark
Ideal visit duration: 1 hour
Massacre Ghat, also known as Satti Chaura Ghat, is a historical site located on the banks of the Ganges River in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. The ghat gained its infamous name from the tragic events of 1857, during the Indian Rebellion against British rule. On 27th June 1857, a large number of British men, women, and children attempting to leave Kanpur were massacred at this ghat by the rebels. The incident is a grim reminder of the brutalities of colonial rule and the uprisings it provoked. Today, Massacre Ghat is a place of historical significance. It serves as a reminder of the city's colonial past and the fight for Indian independence. While the ghat is a stark memorial to a tragic event, it is also a popular spot for locals, serving as a place for religious ceremonies and bathing in the holy Ganges. The peaceful atmosphere of the present day stands in stark contrast to its violent history.
