Best Time To Visit Matsumoto (Japan) In 2026 - 2027

Best Time to Visit Matsumoto, Japan

Matsumoto, nestled in Japan's Nagano Prefecture, is a city renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and the iconic Matsumoto Castle. The best time to visit Matsumoto largely depends on what you're looking to experience. For travellers seeking temperate weather and the chance to see the city's famous cherry blossoms in full bloom, the spring months of April and May are ideal. During this season, Matsumoto comes alive with vibrant colors, and the weather is pleasantly warm with minimum rainfall, making it perfect for sightseeing. The Takato Cherry Blossom Festival in nearby Takato Castle Park is a highlight, often considered one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan.

For those interested in outdoor activities like hiking in the Japan Alps or enjoying the city's summer festivals, June to August promises longer days and a lively atmosphere. However, it is also the season with the highest rainfall, peaking in June, so visitors should be prepared with rain gear. Alternatively, autumn, between September and November, is another fantastic period to visit. The fall foliage creates a breathtaking backdrop to the historic castle and surrounding natural beauty. Cooler temperatures in September gradually lead to crisp and cold by November, but this brisk weather is perfect for enjoying hot springs and sampling seasonal delicacies such as soba (buckwheat noodles) and apples, a regional specialty.
